Furniture Upcycling & Restoration

Source tired solid-wood furniture cheaply, refinish it with paint or restoration and resell at a markup.

Demand for character furniture keeps rising as buyers reject disposable flat-pack. Typical model: buy solid pieces for little or nothing, refinish with paint, wax or new hardware, and sell via marketplaces. Materials are paint, abrasives and hardware; the margin lives in your finish quality and photography. Commissioned refinishing of customers' own pieces adds a service revenue stream. Gross margin figures are planning estimates of revenue minus direct costs (materials, travel and per-job expenses); they exclude the owner's own labour time.

Steps

  1. Set up workspace: Weeks 1-2. Sort a ventilated workspace, buy tools and open seller accounts.
  2. Source first pieces: Weeks 2-3. Buy three to five solid pieces from auctions, house clearances or free listings.
  3. Refinish and photograph: Weeks 3-4. Finish the first batch and shoot bright, styled photos.
  4. Sell and reinvest: Month 2. List at tested prices and reinvest proceeds into more stock.

Risks

  • Unpredictable sourcing: Good pieces take hunting and quick decisions.
  • Storage space: Furniture takes room while it waits to sell.
  • Skill curve: Early finishes rarely command top prices.
