Giant tunnel proposed to clean up Windermere's sewage problem

• A £3.6bn plan to stop sewage being discharged into Windermere, England's largest lake, has been unveiled. • The proposal, backed by water company United Utilities and clean water campaigners, would see a tunnel up to 12 miles (19km) long built to carry sewage away from the lake. • Raw sewage and treated effluent are currently discharged into Windermere, which campaigners blame for the algal blooms turning parts of the water green each summer. • It is now up to the government to decide whether the plan is developed further and whether the price tag is acceptable.
