Police to allow some offenders to breach curfews without arrest
• The Metropolitan Police is reducing enforcement of offenders who breach tag conditions, under a pilot scheme running until spring. • Officers will not act on breaches of police curfews, or tag battery breaches, lasting under an hour unless the person is considered a particular risk to the public; high-risk offenders such as domestic abusers will be prioritised. • The Met says it polices more than 100 tag breaches a day and arrests two or three early-release prisoners a week for further offending, and expects the pilot to cut breaches needing police action by more than 15%.
