Almost a quarter of European airline pilots fly when too fatigued to work

• Three in four European airline pilots have experienced at least one microsleep in the cockpit in the previous four weeks, while almost a quarter (24%) routinely fly despite being too fatigued to work, a survey of almost 7,200 pilots by the European Cockpit Association found. • Only one in three pilots said they usually reported themselves unfit for duty when fatigued, and almost half feared negative consequences from management if they did. • Pilots reported pressure to extend working hours through commander's discretion, with nearly 70% concerned about refusing to extend their duty.
